Bridge jumping 16/05/10
Had a new experience today although I had seen others do it, it’s called bridge jumping.
For those of you who have never seen it, it’s kind of like bungee jumping but without the elastic rope, instead you just use a normal climbing rope and harness.
Anyway, after an invite from Inna we both went to join Andrei on an old viaduct.
After climbing up to the top with a combination of ladder and rope, Andrei rigged up the gear. Basically you securely fasten the rope on top of the bridge some where and hang it over the side at just the right length, this is where the expert experience comes in so it’s a definite “don’t try this at home kids”. You then pull the rope under the bridge and up the other side back on top. It’s from this side you jump out head first down and in an arc, as the rope goes tight you then get pulled underneath and swing to the other side the right way up.
Unlike bungee jumping it needs more technique, if you get it wrong it’s going to hurt.
After setting up the rig Andrei jumped first and tested it, obviously all was well as he appeared back on top a few minutes later no worse for wear.
Inna was next and it was obvious it was not her first jump, no fear visible on her face. My jump took a bit longer as I took a while to prepare myself, 27m looks a lot higher looking down than up, but after a count of three to myself I was off. I have to say I have never seen the ground come at me so fast and it seemed ages before the rope took hold and swung me under the bridge.
Later we were joined by Misha, other friends and some strangers. All in all 13 people jumped off that bridge that day, some of them like me for the first time, a good day all round I say
