Despite the foul weather between Christmas and New Year, we still managed to get out on Helvellyn for a few days from different angles.
A very windy Wednesday day saw John, Ed, Steve and I head up Helvelyn via Swirril edge from Glenridding. With over 65mph winds across the summit John and Steve stayed in the lee of it on Swirril edge, while Ed and I crawled on our knees the last few yards to reach the summit cairn atop the ridge before beating a hasty retreat.
Thursday saw fresh snow and an overnight freeze, so an early start on Friday saw me heading for a winter climb up No 1 gulley before more snow and warming temperatures made conditions impossible. As it was the center section was a little thin and soft and with only 1 axe it was hard going. An hour or so after topping out with the warming temperatures the route was in no fit state.
Saturday was another very wet scramble up Jake’s Rakes then getting a drenching across the tops before an early finish for the New Year.
On Friday I’m off to Argentina for Mt Aconcagua so will be out of contact for a while, if I get the chance I’ll try a few Tweets to let you know whats happening.
